Building an RUB rack

The 50L Rack:

This builds a rack that holds 14 x 50L RUBs

Equipment and Materials:

  • Router
  • Heat Reflective Tape
  • Silicon
  • 150watt Zoo Med Heat Cable
  • 2" Wood Screws

Wood:

  • Melemine Faced Chipboard (15mm ContiBoard)
    • 2 x 24" x 72" - the sides
    • 8 x 24" x 35" - the shelves

Instructions:

  • Router 1 side piece at 4" and 7" from top to bottom (these distances can be changed depending on personal preference but you must change the distance on the shelves to the same)

  • Router 7 shelves at the same distance as the sides, don't go all the way to the end on the shelves, make a loop for the cable to go round.
  • Place heat reflective tape on each of the shelves in the area routered...like so:

  •  To build the rack, start at the bottom, place one routered shelve on the floor and screw in the sides. Make sure the routered groove for the heat cable lines up on the shelve and the side.
  • Place 2 x 50L RUBs on the shelve and a scrap piece of hardboard, then place the second shelve on top and screw into place.

  • Continue to do this until the rack is complete. Use the plain shelve on the top.
  • If you wish to put on a back then this can be hard wood or chip board.
  • To fit the heat cable, thread the cable from the top of the rack down the side piece and along each shelve fitting it into the routered groove.
  • Once in place use a dot of the silicon to hold the heat cable.
  • Attach the heat cable to a thermostat and ensure the temperatures are correct before housing any snakes.
Price Wise:

£75 for wood...cut to size at B&Q
£10 Tape and silocon
£45 for Heat Cable
+ a Stat

The 9L Rack

The rack holds 18 x 9L RUBs

Equipment and Materials:

  • Router
  • Heat Reflective Tape
  • Silicon
  • 50watt Zoo Med Heat Cable
  • 2" Wood Screws

Wood:

  • Melemine Faced Chipboard (15mm ContiBoard)
    • 2 x 42.5" x 15.5" - the sides
    • 7 x 15.5" x 31" - the shelves
  • Hardwood back
    • 42.5" x 31"

Instructions:

  • Router both sides 4" from top to bottom (these distance can be changed depending on personal preference but you must change the distance on the shelves to the same)

  • Router 6 shelves at the same distance as the sides all the way across.
  • Place heat reflective tape on each of the shelves in the area routered...like so:
  • The RUBs are placed on the shelve to know the correct hight, we then placed a thin piece of board between the RUB and the next shelve (this is so the fit isn't to tight)
  • Draw a line in pencil and remove the shelve
  • Drill 3 holes just below the line

  • Replace the shelve and put in the screws
  • We attached a hard wood back
  • Then added the RUBs
